  • Bar Replay Data: Limits & Details

What is the extent of available data for Bar Replay

The amount of historical data accessible in Bar Replay depends on the chosen symbol and chart timeframe. For daily and daily-based timeframes, all available historical data is displayed on the chart and can be used in Bar Replay mode. In contrast, intraday data is limited by TradingView and varies according to the user's subscription plan.

    Essential Plan:

    – The data length is calculated using the formula: from the current time back to 6 weeks, multiplied by the timeframe in minutes.

    – As the selected timeframe increases, more intraday data becomes accessible.

    Examples:

    – You can review data from 6 weeks ago on a 1-minute chart.

    – Up to 12 weeks back on a 2-minute chart.

    – Up to 30 weeks back on a 5-minute chart.

    – Up to 90 weeks back on a 15-minute chart.

    Plus Plan:

    – Provides more extensive intraday historical data, calculated as from now to 6 months back, multiplied by the timeframe in minutes.

    – The higher the timeframe, the greater the amount of intraday data available.

    Examples:

    – Access to 6 months of 1-minute data.

    – For a 2-minute timeframe, the limit extends to 12 months.

    – For a 3-minute timeframe, up to 18 months of data is available.

    Premium and Professional Subscription Plans

Our Premium and Professional plans (Expert and Ultimate) offer access to an expanded range of historical intraday data for the Bar Replay feature, allowing you to play all available data stored in TradingView’s database. By “all data,” we mean every bit of historical information we possess, without additional restrictions. This applies across all timeframes—whether it’s 1 hour, 1 minute, or even 1 second—giving you the full depth of historical data to explore and replay, limited only by the earliest data points available for each symbol on TradingView.

The extent of historical data varies depending on the specific symbol and chart timeframe. For intraday timeframes, TradingView maintains a limited data set, so the historical length on intraday charts may be shorter than on daily charts. For instance, when viewing NASDAQ:AAPL on a daily chart, historical data begins from December 12, 1980, whereas 1-minute data for AAPL starts from January 3, 2000, and the earliest 1-second bars in Replay date back to August 17, 2022.

For certain symbols, 1-minute data may go back as far as 2011, for others as far as 2009, and some may have data extending even further back to 2000. This means you can replay over 20 years of minute-level data for some symbols. However, the available intraday history can be shorter for others, resulting in less data in Replay mode.

Regarding second-based timeframes, TradingView stores data starting from August 2022, with the earliest seconds bars in Replay dating from August 17, 2022.

In summary, Premium and Professional plans enable you to replay data from as far back as the earliest available historical data for each symbol in our database. Examples include:

Please be aware that the replay limits mentioned above do not apply to continuous futures charts — such as the symbols 1! and 2! (e.g., ES1!, BANKNIFTY1!) — or to futures contracts configured with the "Use settlement as close on daily interval" setting, as these have unique intraday restrictions due to their synthetic nature:

    •        Users with Premium, Expert, and Ultimate plans have access to 30 days of second-by-second data for synthetic symbols across all second-based timeframes.

    •        These users also have one year of 1-minute data for synthetic symbols. For a 2-minute timeframe, the limit extends to two years; for 3-minute intervals, three years, and so forth.

    •        Plus users can access up to 6 months of 1-minute data, 12 months of 2-minute data, and similarly for other timeframes.

    •        Essential users can view up to 6 weeks of 1-minute data, 12 weeks of 2-minute data, and so on.

To determine the earliest replayable bar for a given symbol based on your subscription, enable Replay mode, select “Choose date…” from the dropdown menu in the replay panel, and click “Select the first available day.”

You can start the replay from the very first bar or any other point within your available history by using the “Select date” menu.

Furthermore, to view detailed intraday data, you can set the starting point for Bar Replay on a higher timeframe and then switch to a lower one. For instance, if you wish to review older 1-minute bars, you can select the daily timeframe, enable Replay mode, choose the “Select bar” option, and manually pick the starting position somewhere on the chart within your plan's limits. Afterward, switch to the 1-minute timeframe and click Play.

If the chosen starting point for the replay is too distant and no data exists for that time frame, Bar Replay will automatically start from the earliest available bar.

When you switch from a higher to a lower timeframe, it's possible that data available on the higher timeframe (such as daily data) isn't accessible on the lower timeframe chart (like 1-minute) because the intraday limit has been reached or because there is no intraday data stored for that period. In such cases, you'll see the message “Data point unavailable” displayed in the bottom left corner of the chart, and your selected timeframe will remain the same.

If you wish to use a lower timeframe in Replay regardless, you should select a starting point where lower timeframe data exists by using the “Select date” option and choosing “Select the first available day.”

  • Unsupported Charts & Historical Trading

Bar Replay feature is currently unavailable, as the Replay toolbar is not displayed. We do not support replaying the following:

    – Spreads (formulas involving multiple symbols)

    – Non-traditional chart types (such as Renko, Kagi, Point & Figure, Range, Line Break, Heikin Ashi, Volume Footprint, Time Price Opportunity)

    – Charts converted to non-default currencies

    Tick-based charts

If you click the Replay button and the replay panel does not appear, it is likely because one of these unsupported chart types or symbols was selected.

How to trade using historical data:

In Bar Replay mode, you can trade based on historical data. This mode is separate from Paper Trading. Please note that trade data and overall results are only available during the session and are not saved afterward. To begin, simply click on Replay Trading and start the Bar Replay.

Prior to clicking the Play button, you have the option to set your starting capital, primary currency, and commission rate in the relevant menu within the Replay Trading panel. These configurations will influence your trading session, so it's important to customize them to suit your preferences.

Historical data trading becomes accessible immediately after selecting the starting point. You can only place market orders that execute at the current chart price. The number of positions to open can be specified, with default values set to 1 unit for all symbol types except Forex, which defaults to 1000 units. When purchasing a position directly on the chart, execution points are shown as arrows indicating the quantity and price of the trade. To close an open position, click the Flatten button on the market simulator panel; this button is enabled when a position is active and disabled when no position is open.

You have the ability to engage with a position directly on the chart. By dragging and dropping TP/SL components onto the chart, you can establish bracket orders to safeguard your position. To close a position, use either the cross button or the context menu. Reversing a position can be performed through the reverse position button or the context menu.

Within the position, the chart displays the unrealized profit or loss, while the market simulator panel indicates the realized profit or loss. The currency for profit or loss aligns with the currency of the respective symbol.

To view more trading statistics, visit the Overview, Performance Summary, and List of Trades tabs within the Replay Trading panel. Additionally, the Performance Summary and List of Trades can be exported for detailed analysis or documentation purposes.

Once the replay concludes, if at least one trade has been executed, a pop-up will display the trading results for that session.

  • Activate & Use Bar Replay on Charts

How can I activate Bar Replay?

Simply click the Bar Replay button located on the top of the chart to access the replay panel.

The replay buttons are user-friendly, similar to those found in any media player.

Once the replay panel is opened, the chart enters the starting point selection mode. Move your cursor over the chart area, and a blue vertical line accompanied by scissors icons will appear.

Choose the initial position on the chart by clicking on the desired date and time. Then, press the Play button to begin automatic playback. You have the option to modify the playback speed either beforehand or while the replay is in progress.

To manually advance by one step, press the Forward button.

On the chart displaying the Bar Replay, the relevant status will be visible.

You have the option to choose a different starting point even while the replay is active. Simply click on "Go to…" and pick a specific segment of the chart to set a new starting position by clicking on the desired area.

You can also run the Bar Replay simultaneously across all charts in the layout, allowing you to observe how different symbols or timeframes evolve at the same moment.

When switching to a workspace containing multiple charts, you can select the replay mode: either for the current chart only or for all charts at once.

In single chart mode, the replay is initiated on just one chart, and it remains unchanged from its previous state. In “All charts” mode, selecting the starting bar causes the starting line to appear across all charts in the layout. As you choose the starting point on one chart, all charts are synchronized in time, ensuring that the starting point for the replay is visible on each chart.

Additionally, you can stop replay and instantly switch back to live data. The "Jump to real-time chart" button enables you to accomplish this with a single click.

You can dismiss the replay panel by clicking the [X] button on it or by selecting the Bar Replay button located at the top of the chart.

Additional functions and restrictions of Bar Replay include:

    • Server-side alerts continue to be triggered based on live data;

    • Creating new server-side alerts is not possible during replay;

    • Trading orders via Paper Trading or other brokers are executed using real-time data;

    • Quotes shown on the trading panel and in the quotes list reflect live data when the chart is in replay mode;

    • Non-standard chart types are not compatible with Bar Replay;

    • You can add drawing objects and indicators during replay, and they will stay on the chart after exiting the mode;

    • Bar Replay does not support spread charts or tick-based charts;

    • Regression Trend lines and Fixed Range Volume Profile tools are inactive during replay.

  • Using Multi-Chart Layouts Effectively

Utilizing Multi-Chart Layouts in Your Analysis

The multi-chart mode is a valuable feature of TradingView Supercharts that helps you enhance your analysis by viewing multiple charts simultaneously within a single workspace. In this guide, we will explore how to activate and control multi-chart layouts.

    • Activating and controlling multiple charts

    • Synchronizing charts

    Activating and controlling multiple charts

This feature can be turned on through the Layout setup menu.

The great aspect is that regardless of how many charts you'd like to view, you can effortlessly manage each to ensure you don't overlook any activity. Each chart in your layout includes buttons for scrolling and zooming. To enlarge a specific chart, simply click the 'Maximize chart' button, press Alt+Enter, or hold Alt and click on the chart.

To switch between charts in a multi-chart layout, simply press the Tab key. You can find more information about available keyboard shortcuts here.

    Charts synchronization

When selecting multiple charts, all indicators and strategies from the initial chart will be applied to the additional charts. However, chart-specific settings from the original chart won't carry over, as these are linked to each individual chart. You can, however, synchronize some basic settings such as interval, symbol, and others through the Layout setup menu.

Drawing objects work differently: they are only associated with a single symbol. If you change the symbol within the same layout, the drawings will be removed. Nevertheless, you have the option to synchronize drawings across multiple layouts or within a single layout. To do this, locate the drawings synchronization button in the left toolbar's drawings panel—represented by one of two icons.

If this feature is disabled, drawings are stored locally, meaning they will only be visible on the specific symbol and chart within that particular layout.

    • Enabling "Sync drawings in layout" will ensure drawings are displayed on every new chart of the same symbol within that layout.

    • Enabling "Sync drawings globally" will save your drawings across all layouts, so they appear on every new chart of the same symbol, regardless of the layout.

If you disable global synchronization, all drawings associated with that symbol across all other layouts will be removed.

For example, if you add drawings to a chart displaying the TSLA symbol and then switch the symbol to NVDA, those drawings will disappear. Returning to TSLA will restore the previous drawings.

When global sync is enabled, creating a new layout and selecting the TSLA symbol there will retain the drawings made for TSLA on the previous chart, even across different layouts.

We believe this feature will enhance your analysis capabilities. For additional tips and ideas on multi-chart analysis, check out our post: "Watch multiple charts at once and build the perfect workspace."

How do I sync charts within my layout?

To synchronize all charts in your multi-chart layout, click the "Select Layout" button on the main toolbar and choose which elements to synchronize. Through this menu, you can synchronize various chart components such as symbol, crosshair, interval, time, and date range. For instance, if you want both charts to display the same symbol, select "Symbol."

To allow drawing objects to synchronize, activate the Multichart Mode in the Select Layout menu.

Please enable the synchronization of drawing objects by clicking the button located on the left panel.

Keep in mind that drawings can only be synchronized on charts that display the same symbol. Additionally, you can synchronize the symbol and interval settings between charts individually by adding them to different groups. To do this, click on the Symbol/interval chart syncing icon in the Status line or the Series context menu of the chart you want to include in a group, then select one of the emojis from the list. All charts marked with the same emoji will be synchronized. To remove a chart from a group, just uncheck the corresponding emoji.

If you want to resize a layout chart, simply drag one of its sides. Double-clicking on any chart border will reset it to its default size.

You can also resize multiple charts simultaneously by holding down the Shift key while dragging.

    4

On a mobile device, to change a chart's size, tap the border once to select it, then drag to resize.

A double tap on any border will revert the charts to their default dimensions.

  • Accurate Points & Magnet Mode Guide

Drawing points do not snap accurately to OHLC values. To have drawing points automatically snap to the OHLC values of bars, you should enable Magnet Mode located on the left side of your chart; the icon will turn blue when it is activated.

The magnet sensitivity can be modified via the magnet mode menu.

A strong magnet attracts the drawing points toward chart values (bars), regardless of the distance between them. A weak magnet pulls the drawing points toward chart values (bars) only when you draw near to them.

Cursor lag or jump during drawing

If you experience unusual behavior while drawing—such as being unable to set an anchor point in a specific area—it may be due to Magnet Mode being enabled. Magnet Mode causes all movable drawing elements to attach to OHLC values, which can make cursor movement challenging.

To turn off Magnet Mode, click the magnet icon in the left-hand menu (the icon will turn white when disabled).

Please ensure that Magnet Mode is turned off on your chart:

Magnet Mode can also be toggled on or off by holding the Ctrl/Command key while drawing.

My chart or cursor is slow

Please be aware that performance can vary based on several factors, such as the number of open tabs in your browser or browsers on your system, installed extensions (like Adblock), which can impact browser performance, and how long the browser has been running without a restart.

To address freezing or slowness, try the following steps:

    • Reload the chart page

    • Restart your browser

    • Close unnecessary tabs (keep only your chart open)

    • Remove or disable unnecessary browser extensions

    • Switch to a different browser

To troubleshoot freezing or lagging issues, consider these steps:

    • Reload your chart page

    • Restart your browser

    • Close extra tabs (except for your chart)

    • Disable or remove browser extensions

    • Use an alternative browser

I can't see the crosshair line.

This is likely because you've selected a cursor type that doesn't support the crosshair feature. Currently, only the “Cross” and “Dot” cursor types display a crosshair, whereas “Arrow” and “Eraser” types do not.

You can change your cursor type by adjusting it in the top left corner of your screen.

  • Air Gapping in Crypto Security

Air gapping is a security measure used in the context of cryptocurrency and digital assets to enhance protection against cyber threats. Here's an overview of air gapping in cryptocurrency, along with its advantages and disadvantages:

What is Air Gapping in Cryptocurrency?

An air gap is a security practice where a computer or device is physically isolated from all networks, including the internet and local networks. In the context of cryptocurrency:

    – Air-gapped wallets: These are hardware or offline wallets that are not connected to the internet at any point, used to store private keys securely.

    – Purpose: To prevent unauthorized access, hacking, malware, and phishing attacks that could compromise private keys or funds.

    How Does it Work?

    1. Creation of Wallets: Private keys are generated on an air-gapped device, ensuring they are never exposed to online threats.

    2. Storage: Private keys are stored on hardware devices or offline mediums (e.g., hardware wallets, paper wallets).

    3. Transaction Signing: Transactions are prepared on an online device or computer but are signed on the air-gapped device, then transferred via secure methods (USB, QR code, etc.).

    4. Transfer of Data: Any data transfer between online and offline devices is done carefully, often via physical mediums to prevent malware infection.

Advantages of Air Gapping in Cryptocurrency

    1. Enhanced Security

       – Private keys are never exposed to online threats.

       – Reduced risk of hacking, malware, phishing, and remote exploits.

    2. Protection Against Malware

       – Malware that attempts to steal private keys or intercept transactions is ineffective if the wallet never connects to the internet.

    3. Mitigation of Supply Chain Attacks

       – Since private keys are generated offline, supply chain vulnerabilities are minimized.

    4. Control Over Assets

       – Users retain full control over their private keys without relying on third-party services.

    5. Long-Term Storage

       – Ideal for securely storing large amounts of cryptocurrency (cold storage) over long periods.

Disadvantages of Air Gapping in Cryptocurrency

    1. Complexity and Usability

       – Setting up and maintaining air-gapped systems requires technical expertise.

       – Transferring data securely between offline and online devices can be cumbersome.

    2. Risk of Physical Theft or Damage

       – Physical devices or paper wallets can be lost, damaged, or stolen.

       – Recovery procedures may be complicated if backups are not properly maintained.

    3. Potential for Human Error

       – Mistakes during transaction signing or data transfer can lead to lost funds.

    4. Limited Accessibility

       – Not suitable for frequent transactions; better suited for long-term storage.

    5. Cost

       – Hardware wallets and secure storage media incur costs.

       – Additional infrastructure and security measures increase expenses.

    6. Supply Chain and Operational Risks

       – Risks associated with hardware manufacturing, tampering, or counterfeit devices.

Best Practices When Using Air Gapping in Cryptocurrency

    – Generate private keys only on secure, offline devices.

    – Use hardware wallets from reputable vendors.

    – Maintain secure and encrypted backups of private keys.

    – Transfer data via secure methods (e.g., QR codes, encrypted USB drives).

    – Regularly update and audit security protocols.

    – Limit physical access to offline devices.

    Summary

Air gapping is a highly effective security measure for safeguarding cryptocurrencies, especially for long-term storage or large holdings. While it offers significant protection against online threats, it requires careful setup, management, and physical security measures. Users should weigh these factors based on their security needs and technical capabilities.
